I'm not one of those computer geniuses who read the white paper, had an epiphany, and saw how Bitcoin opens up a world of possibility and freedom. I came to it the long way around.
I first heard about Bitcoin in 2013, when the Silk Road was the only thing anyone talked about. I bought a little. In 2015 I tried mining. A few years later, I sold all of it for a small gain and walked away, because I still didn't really understand what I was holding.
It wasn't until 2020, when I read Saifedean Ammous's The Bitcoin Standard, that I decided to take Bitcoin seriously. The book gave me the context I had been missing: why sound money matters, why fiat fails, why a fixed supply changes everything. With that in hand, I finally dug deep into how Bitcoin actually works, this time with the why already settled. By then I was years behind where I could have been.
